ABOUT WOODY:

Pet Therapy – Delta Society

“Woody was a little street dog picked up off the streets somewhere outside of Newark, New Jersey. The shelter named him Woodrow – Woody for short. By fate, Woody and I came together. Woody was very special. He had a sense of humor and was fun to be with.

There was a police boat that left from  the pier where the Family Assistance Center was and it took the victim’s families down to Ground Zero. Woody went on that boat. I will never forget going. The silence was chilling. Families petted him with nervous anxiety as we sailed down to the site. People clung to Woody as we neared the dock. The site was eerie and felt holy at the same time. Woody led the people to the platform that overlooked the devastation past the military and police men and women standing like statues in tribute. The family members had their private time on the viewing platform and returned -some rushing to hug Woody as they headed back to the boat. Woody knew that his job was to be brave and to be strong for these grieving families and he was, and he did. He was probably hugged a little too tightly and grabbed at with too much vigor, but he welcomed the hugs and outreached arms and he responded to the need to be comforted. It was natural for him. He knew they needed him and he gave them the love and warmth they craved. He was proud and I could see it in his eyes as he looked back at me.

Woody went there twice a week for many months. He visited with old and young alike. The people would rush up to him and hug him and hold him. Some family members told Woody about their loved one. Some held him and wept. Others stroked him and wept in silence and others embraced him without saying a word and he knew what to do. I
was so proud of this little guy from the street. I will never forget. Woody, a stray dog who made a big difference in a lot of lives.”
