ABOUT SHERIDAN

Search and Rescue – VA-TF1

“As a member of VA-TF1, Sheridan and I were dispatched to the Pentagon on 9/11. We entered the building shortly after arriving and began searching for possible survivors who hadn’t been pulled out by the initial response efforts. These beginning forays were somewhat limited due to a number of safety factors that put us at risk. For Sheridan, the risks included smoke inhalation (there was still a fair amount of smoke from the ongoing fire) and floors that were extremely hot in some areas and which were difficult to recognize since we were wearing large insulated boots. Large parts of the building were still collapsing and very unstable, so we couldn’t penetrate those areas until they had been shored up. Toward the end of our week-long mission, it became apparent that the chance of finding any survivors was extremely unlikely, and some of the dogs started to be used to find the deceased. Sheridan participated in those efforts and did locate one deceased person. Although the Pentagon was his only FEMA deployment, Sheridan went on over 100 search missions through my local wilderness group. He had several finds during his career, the most notable being an arm bone that had a bullet hole in it; this prompted a lengthy homicide investigation that was eventually documented and aired in an episode on The Real NCIS, a Discovery Communications program.”
