“On the first day of the Presentation of Flags and Urns, when families were presented with their loved ones ashes from Ground Zero, Patrick and I stood just outside the building’s entrance working with the families who were waiting in line to enter. One woman in line reached for Patrick, then dropped to her knees and collapsed emotionally into him. While she was crying out her grief to him she would stop every so often and ask me for his name, then his age, make a comment or laugh at herself, then begin crying again. This continued for five or ten minutes. The harder she cried, the closer Patrick placed himself to her. A member of her family came back outside to find her. With a deep sigh she calmed herself and gave Patrick and me big hugs. She thanked us and told us that now she would be able to handle what she needed to do.”
