Valik
Assistance Dog
2002, acrylic on canvas, 36" x 36"
Brendan was born with severe cerebral palsy and has undergone eight major orthopedic surgeries. He requires an attendant and a wheelchair. Prior to Valik joining the family, Brendan was tactilely defensive (didn't like to be touched) but Valik has lovingly desensitized him by lying across his lap, kissing him and proving unconditionalized love and patience to "his person." Brendan's mom, Martie, tributes Valik in providing an emotional connection that supports the whole family. Valik is Brendan's bridge into the community.
